With regular checking of V-belt, car owners can avoid the costly consequences of breaking the accessory belt. So how do you know when to replace the V-belt? What sorts of risks are associated with the breakage of this accessory belt?

In older cars, the accessory belt was a part that was easy to replace and was generally responsible for driving the alternator. During an untimely break-up, the repair could be easily carried out by yourself on the road or by calling a car service at doorstep in Mumbai. The car was able to continue for about 50 kilometres without recharging.

Due to these reasons, nowadays, many drivers forget to regularly check the wear and tear of the V-belt, usually focusing solely on the timing belt. Meanwhile, in modern cars, its failure will not only result in loss of moving, in extreme cases, you will need to make repairs for several thousand rupees.

What drives the V-belt?

This kind of little positive situation is possible because, in many cars, the auxiliary belt moves not only the alternator but also other parts of the engine accessories. The belt is intended to transfer the drive from the engine crankshaft also to the other elements, i.e., depending on the unit, to the water pump, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump or even the radiator fan.

This is why their size has not been altered than it used to be (up to 2 meters long), but more susceptible to damage. The belt is tightened by tilting one of the aggregates, by using an automatic tensioner or by visiting a car service in Mumbai.

What influences the accelerated wear of the V-belt?

The V-belt generally wears out because of improper tension. If it is too loose, a slip can happen at the contact surface of the rubber with the rollers of the aggregates, and then the V-belt squeals. In contrast, too much tension harms the condition of the bearings in the roller, which also affects the belt’s condition since the bearing needs to encounter more resistance and can even jam.

The rollers also damage the belt. When their surface becomes conical because of the wear, the strip moves to the side and rubs, among other elements, especially on the body of the tensioner or the head. Moreover, the pulley can also delaminate, generally consisting of two elements connected using a rubber vibration damper.

What are the wear symptoms of the drive belt?

An experienced car owner can immediately notice the squeaking noise appearing from the V-belt area immediately after starting the engine. Most often, it only occurs on wet days and then increases with the addition of the fuel. The belt should be replaced when it is frayed due to rubbing against another nearby element or when it begins to crack (the rubber of the treadmill is rubbing with age). You can easily resolve such issues by using an online car service in Mumbai.
