Display and Performance
The Pro model this year comes with a 6.1-inch screen, and the Pro Max boasts a 6.7-inch display – just like the new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. The Action Button
The action button, replacing the iPhone Pro’s left-side ringer switch, is a new button that can be customized for shortcuts, accessibility features, camera access, flashlight activation, and more. By default, it still functions as a ringer switch, but you’ll want to explore its expanded capabilities.
Advanced Cameras
Both Pro models feature Super Retina XDR displays and support Always-On Display and new Standby Mode in iOS 17. Apple’s marketing chief, Greg Joswiak, promised that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have the best cameras Apple has ever made – equivalent to seven different lenses. This includes an improved 48-megapixel camera that reportedly captures better photos in low light, captures fewer lens flares, and uses Apple’s AI system for full-resolution HEIF photos. You can now switch your default lens and shoot at several focal lengths within the main camera – 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm. You can also achieve up to 5x optical zoom at a focal length of 120mm, which is the most zoom Apple has ever presented. While fans of Samsung’s latest cameras might not be overly impressed, it’s a significant upgrade for iPhone users.
Video Capabilities
On the video side, you can shoot 4K60 ProRes video on the device or even shoot directly to an external drive through the USB-C port (provided you have the right cable). The iPhone 15 Pro can also capture “Cinematic Video,” which is what we’re seeing for Vision Pro – although this feature is coming later in the year. It’s clear that Apple is positioning the iPhone 15 Pro as not only a consumer device but also as a professional tool for creators and filmmakers.
iOS 17 Enhancements
Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled these new devices at the Apple Park in Cupertino, California, although rumors have been circulating for months, as usual. How you actually use your iPhone will change significantly this year, with some of the most significant changes in iOS 17: the new Standby Mode can alter how you use your phone when it’s off, interactive widgets can redesign many home screens, and features like Live Voicemail and Contact Posters can make you reach for your phone more often.
While Apple didn’t talk much about USB-C this year, the new port opens up new possibilities for how you can capture and use data from your Pro phone (no one really needs 48-megapixel photos for Instagram, but now it’s incredibly easy to use those massive photos elsewhere). Joswiak called the new Pro lineup “our best and most Pro iPhone yet,” and he’s not wrong. While the 15 models improve the everyday experience of using an iPhone, the new Pro is going somewhere else entirely.
